Schedule change (again)! Due to an emergency, we were unable to have lab today. The lab will be Wednesday (dress appropriately), and the test will be the week after next. Hopefully, nothing else will change, and we can roll on to our next topic: THE MOLE!

In order for students to thoroughly understand ionic equations and solubility, the test will be next week. We will spend this week practicing those concepts, and we will have lab Friday. Sorry to rearrange the schedule, but I believe these extra few days will really solidify students' understanding of the material.

We are continuing our study of chemical reactions and equations. Students will have lab Thursday and Friday. Thursday, lab attire is not necessary as we will remain in the classroom to demonstrate molecular structure through food (well, marshmallows and gumdrops)! However, students should wear appropriate lab clothing Friday for our halide lab.

The test will be next week.

Students have received their lab licenses. We will do labs on isotopes and density this week.

Nine weeks tests will be Monday, October 15.

Honors students must write a two-page, double spaced, 12 point TNR font paper on any famous scientist's contribution to science. This is due Thursday, October 18.

September 10, 2012
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Until our first lab, which is in a few days, EDline will show that students are "missing" (need to make up) a lab grade. Disregard this - it does not affect students' reported grade. However, after 3:00 PM today, if EDline shows a student is "missing" any other grade (represented by **), this is accurate. In order to receive a grade other than ZERO, students will need to check with me and make up this work, provided that student has not waited too long after the assignment was due.

Hello, students and parents! I'm so excited about the upcoming year here at Pike Liberal Arts School. My number one priority as a teacher is to facilitate growth. I'm here to help, and I will do my absolute best to encourage students toward success.

In order to succeed in this class, students will need:
     Pencil
     Paper
Good organizational and time management skills
     Scientific calculator

The scientific calculator may be as simple as you like - you can get them at the Dollar Tree for a dollar. If the student knows he or she would like to go into a scientific or mathematical field in college and would like a more advanced calculator, that is fine. However, ANY CALCULATOR MORE ADVANCED THAN A TI-83 WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN CLASS.

A syllabus will be sent home on Friday to be signed by the student and parents and returned the following Monday.

Homework assignments will be posted here daily, and Edline will be updated weekly.

Students, I encourage you to register for the ACT if you have not already. Take it as many times as you can - most of the time when students retake the ACT, their scores go up. This test can make a world of difference in your life - starting with college and ending who knows where. Don't take it lightly.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at rlowe@pikelib.com.

Thank you,
Robyn Lowe
